A few years ago, in Brazil, many professionals who wanted to join the micropigmentation market lacked cutting-edge equipment and materials. There were not many courses about this practice either, especially improvement training courses featuring new and advanced techniques. Within this context, I, André dos Santos, plunged into the micropigmentation world.
The lack of tools and knowledge about how to use these tools was the challenge I had to face eight years ago. Through it, I discovered a new area of operation — more than that, I discovered a new purpose. Besides selling equipment, I noticed that I could create a support network, something to guide and encourage micropigmentation workers towards professional evolution.
Of course my perceptions didn’t arise from nowhere. They developed after a business opportunity that came up.
A friend showed me a catalog with the most innovative tools in the market, but she and other professionals did not have access to them, as they were not sold in Brazil. André dos Santos then thought: “Okay, that’s a good opportunity. I can sell these products”. I am a mechanical technologist and I’ve worked in 35 countries with business development and sales, that is, I had worked with international trade before.
However, the sale proved to be much more complex than I had imagined. Several customers had no idea how to handle the products. So my first step was to address that problem. “If, in order to sell the product, I need to teach them how to use it, that’s what I’m going to do”. I would not give up.
At that moment, I saw this great opportunity staring back at me. I was facing an audience that needed the products as much as the services associated with them.
I could sell them and improve the lives of these professionals, helping them to stand out in the market in which they work. I had to use my entrepreneur resilience to understand ‘how to do it’ and how to be effective at the trainings.

The Birth of SILAM
I came from other areas of economy and I saw this market as a business opportunity, but I came across extremely human aspects that only sharpened the development of a new purpose.
I realized that I could change people’s lives. In a direct way, through the students, helping them to evolve professionally, and also indirectly, through the patients, who would be able to feel a real change in their lives by improving their self-esteem.
In this context, the Simpósio de Integração Latino Americano de Micropigmentação – SILAM (Latin American Micropigmentation Integration Symposium) was born. At first, the goal of salesman and entrepreneur André dos Santos was simply to offer some guidance, a kind of curatorship service, to micropigmentation professionals and help them manage their business, as well as to promote meetings and exchanges of ideas among these people.
But I noticed that people would have to tread a journey similar to mine in order to learn several technical things. This awakened in me an irresistible duty to share what I had learned. I had gathered a lot of knowledge from the engineering area, which is my background education.
Eight years of hard work passed before I actually started offering professional qualification services. This reflects the fact that initially my plans revolved around managing the company, not necessarily facing the audience as a speaker.
The First Master Class
My first time as a teacher was in Uruguay, in the city of Montevideo, in 2015. I offered a “pilot” course — something that I still do for each new course — for friends and some students. This helped me a lot to better design the methodology and content of the class as well as to keep track of the presentation time. With the feedback they offered me, I was able to considerably improve the quality.
By the way, this is something I like to stress: The infamous feedback. Most of us are not prepared to receive criticism or even suggestions, but they are important. Especially if you are starting something new.
By now, you must be wondering: “What does this André dos Santos have or what has he done differently, anyway?”. Or maybe: “What is so interesting about his courses?”
Based on a study that identified the 13 most common skin tone spectra in Brazil, we created the Practical Pigment Handbook 1.0, which helps you to select the right pigments when you are performing an eyebrow micropigmentation.
Practical Pigment Handbook 1.0
The Micropigmentation Guide of Pigments and the training to learn how to use it is one of the main reasons why SILAM is acknowledged both in the national and international market — offering events, online courses and Master Classes worldwide. We are always seeking to clarify the questions about pigmentation for each skin type, how to choose the right color tone and other aspects.
In the guide, we have 24 essential colors. Then, we can adjust the preview of the healed tone according to the base color, its position in relation to the 13 spectra of skin tones and we can add complementary bases as needed.
The guide also covers the expectation after healing, that is, it comprehends two fundamental aspects which are part of the micropigmentation process:
- Skin color of the person receiving the pigment
- The colors of the pigment itself and its components
And it also raises some questions:
Do you understand that your customers have different skin tones?
Do you think that having a tool that helps you to plan and develop the pigment color for each skin tone may facilitate your work?
If you answered YES to the previous questions, then you already know what I did (and I still do, because I’m always looking to evolve) differently.
Constant Improvement is in SILAM’s DNA
And this must also be in any professional’s DNA, independent of their field of business. That’s how we and, in result, the company grew. In fact, this was a natural move.
The process is similar to what happens, for example, when we leave our parents’ house. First, we look for something smaller like a kitchenette and, over time, we feel the need for a bigger space, especially when we are a family.
The same thing happened to SILAM. The need for new employees emerged and, with that, we required new rooms and thus, a larger space. A natural evolutionary effect, and that is how we are getting bigger and bigger since 2010.
Today, SILAM represents and embraces something that goes beyond the training courses.
- SILAM Master Class (information and schedule of courses and events)
- SILAM Book Magazine (magazine with exclusive content and interviews with professionals and experts renowned worldwide)
- SILAM Club (community of members who have access to all the above advantages and more)
The main prize we could ever wish for is the recognition of our students. Every positive feedback, every message telling us of how we help them achieve success only makes me feel more and more satisfied with the work I do.
The achievements have come; and the recognition arrives in different ways and shapes in this field. I’ve received certificates of honor and even a beautiful gift from a client: a miniature statue of myself!
I could spend days talking about SILAM, the Pigments Handbook and the myriad of answers it gives us — and also the questions it asks us —, but my first post would be gigantic. So, I want to invite you to keep following our SILAM blog. Many topics will still be featured here!
